Kai Trump’s fresh appearance at Knicks game ignores grandfather’s detractors

Donald Trump’s eldest granddaughter, Kai, turned heads at the NBA Finals on Monday night – not because of the thunderous boos that greeted the president, but because of her newly unveiled blonde hair. The 19-year-old, seated in a VIP suite at Madison Square Garden alongside her grandfather, debuted a layered “Palm Beach blonde” look that has quickly become a signature of those in Trump’s inner circle.
From Brown to Blonde
Kai, who until this week had brown hair, shared behind-the-scenes clips of her transformation on social media earlier in the week. Monday night marked her first public appearance with the new shade, and she paired it with a more mature makeup style. The change did not go unnoticed online, with many fans remarking that she was beginning to look “more and more like your beautiful mom” – a reference to Vanessa Trump, the former wife of Donald Trump Jr. and current girlfriend of Tiger Woods.
The teenager stood proudly alongside the president during the national anthem, smirking as the crowd ferociously booed when Trump appeared on the jumbotron. She was seated two seats away from her grandfather, with Knicks owner James Dolan between them, and the entire Trump entourage was shielded by bulletproof glass in the mid-level suite.

The ‘Palm Beach Blonde’ and the MAGA Elite
The hair colour Kai has adopted is not merely a stylistic choice; it has become a marker of proximity to the president. Dubbed “Palm Beach blonde” or “honey blonde” by insiders, the shade is now something of a uniform among the MAGA elite. Melania Trump, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, and Erika Kirk – the wife of NFL quarterback Kirk Cousins – have all sported variations of the same colour.
Celebrity hairstylist Angela Haight described the look as “a luxury hair colour … and it’s expensive. That can almost be perceived as a status symbol to a degree.” The association with opulence runs deep in the Trump family. The president’s own taste for extravagance was evident in, among other things, his $400 million renovation of the White House ballroom. By adopting this shade, Kai has signalled her alignment with the aesthetic of her grandfather’s close circle, a move observers see as a deliberate step into the MAGA orbit.

Golf Dreams and a Changing Family Dynamic
Away from the political spotlight, Kai has built a reputation as a competitive golfer. She made her LPGA debut in November 2025 and has committed to playing for the University of Miami’s women’s golf team starting in the 2026–27 academic year, with the goal of eventually graduating to the LPGA Tour full-time. Her social media presence – spanning millions of followers across TikTok, Instagram and YouTube – has amplified her profile, and she gained national prominence after delivering a speech supporting her grandfather at the 2024 Republican National Convention.
Yet her personal life has also been shaped by recent family upheaval. Her mother, Vanessa Trump, revealed last month that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer and is undergoing treatment. Vanessa has been in a relationship with Tiger Woods since at least March 2025, though Woods is currently undergoing rehabilitation in Switzerland following a DUI arrest in March. Kai’s siblings – Donald John III, Tristan Milos, Spencer Frederick and Chloe Sophia – complete a family that has drawn intense public scrutiny.

At the Garden, Kai appeared to enjoy the evening despite the hostile reception. The president arrived by Marine One, landing on Wall Street before being driven to the arena. The game – Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs – marked the first time a sitting US president had attended an NBA Finals game. Enhanced security included the cancellation of an outdoor watch party, with fans advised to arrive at least two hours early. Celebrities such as Timothée Chalamet, Ben Stiller, Tina Fey and Jay-Z were also in attendance, but it was Trump’s party – and Kai’s new hair – that dominated the conversation.
