US man held for 1993 rock singer murder after decades evading police

A murder suspect who spent more than three decades evading authorities after allegedly killing his rock singer roommate has been apprehended in Central America, the US Marshals Service has confirmed.

Richard Werstine, now 56, was taken into custody at a dog park in Panama City, Panama, on 29 April 2026, without incident. At the time of his arrest he was carrying fraudulent identification, but fingerprint testing later confirmed his true identity. Werstine has since confessed to being on the run for more than 30 years and admitted he entered Panama illegally in 2005, never obtaining legal status in the country.

The 1993 killing

Werstine is accused of murdering his roommate and close friend Rodney Barger, the 23-year-old vocalist of the Detroit hardcore punk band Cold as Life. Investigators allege Werstine shot Barger in the head while he slept inside their shared Detroit residence on 15 September 1993. The motive for the killing has never been disclosed.

Barger, who performed under the stage name Rawn Beauty, co-founded Cold as Life in 1988. The band, originally called Mattress Rats, became known for its raw, aggressive sound and lyrics that reflected the socio-economic struggles of urban Detroit. Revolver magazine once described Barger as a “fabled wild-man” whose “talents as a belligerent vocalist and underclass poet remain obvious”. Following his death, the band went on hiatus before reuniting sporadically in later years. A 2023 release, In Memory Of Rodney A. Barger 1970-1993, features recordings from the band’s early years.

Decades on the run

Detroit police first arrested Werstine just days after Barger’s death, but he never showed up for trial proceedings. A warrant for his arrest was issued in June 1994. For more than 30 years he successfully evaded capture, with a federal source telling local station WDIV: “He was a ghost since ’94. He was very cunning, very crafty while on the run.”

During that time, authorities later learned, Werstine was arrested multiple times under different aliases, but his real identity remained unknown to law enforcement. The case remained open for decades until the US Marshals Service assumed responsibility for it in May 2022, focusing on his failure to appear on murder charges.

Chief Deputy US Marshal Jimmy Allen said in a statement: “The tenacity and commitment of the US Marshals Service working to bring Werstine and those like him into police custody where they belong is at the forefront of our daily mission here in Detroit. His arrest not only works toward bringing closure to the friends and family who have lost a loved one but also demonstrates our promise to pursue those who think they can prey on the members of our communities without being held accountable.”

How authorities tracked him down

The breakthrough came through the work of the Detroit Fugitive Apprehension Team (DFAT), a unit of the US Marshals Service. Over the past year, the team pursued several investigative leads and coordinated closely with the US Marshals Service’s International Operations Division and Panamanian authorities to locate Werstine.

Officials said that during the investigation they discovered Werstine had been arrested multiple times over the years while using different aliases, though his real identity had remained hidden. The US Marshals Service, which operates a “15 Most Wanted Fugitive Program” and a “Major Case Fugitive Program” to prioritise the capture of high-profile and dangerous offenders, has a track record of pursuing such cases. In 2025 alone, the agency arrested over 73,000 fugitives.

Once Werstine was identified as the suspect in Panama, Panamanian authorities worked with US Marshals to coordinate the arrest at the dog park in Panama City. After his capture, he confessed to his identity and to being on the run for more than three decades. He is expected to be turned over to Wayne County law enforcement in Michigan to face the outstanding murder charge.

Werstine remains in custody.
