Abseil from Lloyd’s Building roof in the City

Adrenaline seekers and charity fundraisers are being offered the chance to abseil down the iconic Lloyds Building in the City of London next month, as part of the annual Lady Mayor’s Appeal. The challenge, which takes place over two days in July, invites participants to descend the 289ft (88-metre) exterior of Richard Rogers’ celebrated “Inside-Out Building” — the youngest structure ever to receive a Grade I listing — in support of organisations working to create a more inclusive City.
The abseil is open to anyone over 18 who is reasonably fit and healthy, and no previous experience is necessary. A team of abseiling experts will be on hand to provide instruction, organisers say. The event is a collaboration between The Lord Mayor’s Appeal and the Lloyd’s of London Foundation, and participants will be descending from the top of the building at 1 Lime Street, London, EC3M 7HA. The Lloyd’s building, designed by Lord Rogers and opened by the Queen in 1986, is widely known for its High-Tech architecture, with external lifts, ducts and pipes that maximise interior space. Historic England has described it as “universally recognized as one of the key buildings of the modern epoch.”
Would-be abseilers should be aware of the financial commitment involved. The initial registration fee is £50. Participants are then required to raise a minimum of £350 in sponsorship from friends, colleagues and supporters — who, the organisers note wryly, “will be more than happy to see you leap off the side of a building with just a thin rope to hold you up.” For those fundraising specifically for The Passage, a charity supporting people experiencing homelessness and a flagship partner of the Lloyd’s of London Foundation, the minimum sponsorship commitment is lower, at £250. Other charities supported by The Lord Mayor’s Appeal include MQ Mental Health Research, Homewards and National Numeracy. One participant, for instance, is raising money for UNITAS, an association that supports blind and visually impaired people.
The abseil challenge itself will take place all day on Wednesday 8 July and Thursday 9 July 2026. Lady Mayor Alderwoman Dame Susan Langley will take part alongside her husband, Mayoral Consort Gary Langley, with the Lady Mayor scheduled to make her descent on the morning of Thursday 9 July.
For those who prefer to watch rather than take part, the viewing dates are the same: 8 and 9 July. Even if you are not descending, organisers suggest that is the time to be in the area to see the abseilers in action. The event is one of several organised under the Lady Mayor’s Appeal banner, which also includes the Lady Mayor’s Ride Out (sponsored by Triumph Motorcycles), the Lady Mayor’s Cup charity football tournament, the Lady Mayor’s Pullman train journey from Cannon Street, and the historic Lady Mayor’s Show — held for the first time in 2025, marking a milestone in the City’s ceremonial calendar. City Giving Day, a broader celebration of charitable activity across the Square Mile, also sees numerous organisations take part in fundraising efforts. Charity abseils from London landmarks are a recurring phenomenon, with previous examples including The Shard in 2012, the ArcelorMittal Orbit, and the Royal London Hospital helipad. Other challenges such as the “Climb the Capital” event involve ascending three skyscrapers: the Cheesegrater, the Scalpel, and the Walkie-Talkie.
