Capsey and Knight key as England wrap up T20 series win over India

England achieved their highest T20I run-chase in eight years on Tuesday evening at Taunton, overhauling India’s total of 181 with nine balls to spare in a series-deciding victory that provided a timely confidence boost just ten days before their World Cup opener against Sri Lanka.

The chase

Having opted to bowl first — a strategic decision to gain valuable practice batting under lights, with all five of their World Cup group-stage fixtures scheduled for the evening — England’s reply began in alarming fashion. They slumped to 38 for three inside the opening six overs, a collapse that included the familiar sight of Amy Jones picking out midwicket. The hosts were staring at a defeat that would have undermined their preparations.

What followed was a match-turning partnership of 137 runs from 76 balls between Alice Capsey and Heather Knight, a stand that dragged England back into contention and ultimately carried them to the brink of victory.

The Capsey-Knight masterclass

Capsey, aged 20 and making her highest international score, smashed 82 from 43 deliveries, striking nine fours and three sixes. Her previous best T20I score had been 74. The right-hander, who made her international debut in July 2022 and was voted the inaugural PCA Women’s Young Player of the Year in 2021, middled the ball superbly throughout, muscling boundaries down the ground to the delight of the 6,000-strong crowd at the Cooper Associates County Ground — a venue that the ECB designated the ‘Official Home of Women’s Cricket’ in 2009.

At the other end, Heather Knight — 14 years Capsey’s senior — produced a measured but rapid response to recent criticism of her strike rate. The England captain reached a 31-ball half-century, her quickest ever in international cricket, before punching the winning boundary backward of square. Her innings was characterised by nifty sweeps and an ability to rotate the strike, ensuring the required rate never spiralled beyond control.

With six runs still needed, Capsey was caught attempting a ramp off the bowling of Nandani Sharma — a pacer who recently made her T20I debut for India and had previously taken 3/34 against England, as well as a hat-trick and five-wicket haul in the Women’s Premier League 2026. But Knight remained to finish the job, sealing England’s highest successful run-chase in T20Is since they chased 199 for three against India in March 2018.

India’s innings

Earlier, India had set a testing target by scoring steadily at roughly nine an over throughout their innings. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur — who has amassed more than 8,000 international runs and led India to victory in the 2025 Women’s Cricket World Cup — struck an unbeaten 56 from 40 balls, featuring seven fours. She shared a partnership of 40 from 26 balls with Jemimah Rodrigues, a middle-order batter who was also part of India’s World Cup-winning squad, and a more substantial stand of 67 from 48 balls with Deepti Sharma.

Yastika Bhatia, who had been retired out on 33 in the previous match, looked determined to avoid a repeat here, scoring a rapid 32 from 18 balls. She found the boundary from both her third and fourth deliveries but later took a tumble at the crease while attempting to sweep Linsey Smith. Her subsequent dismissal — run out by a superb direct hit from Sophie Ecclestone at extra cover — came after some unhurried running that may reflect the lingering effects of her recent ACL surgery.

Lauren Bell was the pick of England’s bowlers, finishing with two for 36. Her slower ball again proved a potent weapon, first sneaking past the bat of Rodrigues and then, in the penultimate over of India’s innings, causing Deepti Sharma to miscue a catch to Charlie Dean at mid-off.

Under pressure, England’s fielding generally held up well, but there was a notable blemish for Ecclestone, who fumbled an easy opportunity to run out Richa Ghosh off the final ball of the innings. Despite being only a metre in front of the stumps, Ecclestone underarmed the ball wide and allowed an overthrow. The moment was a rare slip in an otherwise disciplined performance, though Ecclestone has had previous injury scares, including a shoulder concern during the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup.

England’s bowling strategy raised eyebrows: they stuck with just five bowlers, despite all of them being taken for runs and both Freya Kemp and Capsey being available as additional options. Kemp, who alongside Capsey received her first England central contract in November 2022, had been instrumental in the previous match, scoring an unbeaten 39 from 13 balls to help England level the series with a 26-run win in Bristol.

Thunderstorms had threatened to ruin the series decider, but the weather held, allowing a proper conclusion to an enthralling contest. England now disperse for a few days before reconvening in Cardiff next weekend for two official World Cup warm-ups, the first against Australia. The sun may have shone at Taunton, but their biggest summer has barely begun.
