Three further arrests after man’s body found in fire-damaged Isle of Wight home

A man in his 20s was found dead after a house fire in Cowes on the Isle of Wight that police are treating as suspicious.

Arrests and charges

Four men have now been arrested in connection with the death. On Saturday evening, officers detained two 24-year-old men and a 59-year-old, all from Cowes, on suspicion of murder and arson with intent to endanger life. A Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesperson confirmed the three remain in custody. A 28-year-old from Ventnor was arrested the previous day on suspicion of murder, arson with intent to endanger life, and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place. He has been released on bail with conditions until 27 September.

The charge of arson with intent to endanger life reflects the seriousness of the blaze. Fire crews reported the fire started in the roof of a mid-terraced property in Ronsons Close and spread rapidly to adjoining homes, causing fire and smoke damage to at least three properties. Neighbouring residents were evacuated as a precaution. At the height of the incident, around 30 firefighters from Newport, Cowes, Ryde, Sandown and Freshwater were deployed, assisted by an Aerial Ladder Platform and an Incident Command Support vehicle. Additional crews from Cosham and Southsea on the mainland were brought in to maintain fire cover on the island. The fire was brought under control by around 7am. An ambulance crew, including an Operational Commander and a Critical Care Paramedic, also attended. The additional charge of possession of an offensive weapon against the Ventnor suspect indicates that police believe a weapon may have been involved in the incident.

The discovery

Emergency services were called to the blaze in Ronsons Close shortly before 3.30am on Friday, 26 June. The victim, a man in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene. A file is being prepared for the coroner. Formal identification has not yet taken place, but the victim’s next of kin have been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers. The fire service confirmed that engineers from Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks attended to make the area safe, with excavation work required to access underground infrastructure. The Isle of Wight Council’s Emergency Housing Team is assisting residents displaced by the fire in finding temporary accommodation.

Bail and ongoing inquiries

The 28-year-old man from Ventnor was released on bail pending further inquiries, with conditions in place until late September. The three other suspects from Cowes remain in police custody. Officers are appealing for anyone with doorbell, dashcam, or CCTV footage from the area to come forward. Witnesses can call 101, report online via the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary website quoting incident number 44260302232, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. A visible police presence will remain in the Ronsons Close area in the coming days as investigations continue. Police have also confirmed that activity at The Quay in Newport is connected to the inquiry.
