Allergy risk prompts supermarket to withdraw Valentine’s meal

The Co-op supermarket has withdrawn a batch of its Irresistible Triple Cook Thick Cut Chunky Chips from sale after they were incorrectly packed with a product containing milk.
The 360g packs, which carry a use-by date of 14 February 2026, pose a potential health risk because milk is not declared on the label. The supermarket has issued a “do not eat” warning to anyone with a milk allergy or intolerance who has purchased the affected product.
According to a recall notice, the chips have been packed with Dauphinoise potatoes, which contain the undeclared allergen. The Food Standards Agency states that Co-op has contacted relevant allergy support organisations to inform their members of the issue. The supermarket has also issued point-of-sale notices in its stores detailing the recall.
Customers who have bought the product are being told to return the packs to their local Co-op store for a full refund. Those who purchased the chips online can arrange a refund by calling a dedicated telephone number, as noted by The Independent. The Co-op has apologised for any inconvenience caused.
Allergy risks and symptoms
Milk allergy is one of the world’s most common allergies and can, in severe cases, be life-threatening. Symptoms can be triggered within minutes or up to an hour after contact with cow’s milk.
While many reactions are mild—including an itchy mouth, facial swelling, rash, vomiting, abdominal pain, runny nose or sneezing—they can also be moderate or severe. According to Allergy UK, the most severe form is anaphylaxis, which causes swelling of the tongue and throat, difficulty breathing and dizziness.
