Family mourn 16-year-old stabbed to death in row about a boy

A fifth teenager has been arrested by detectives investigating the murder of 16-year-old Chloe Watson Dransfield, who was found stabbed to death on a residential street in Leeds over the weekend.

The 17-year-old boy was detained on Monday on suspicion of murder, West Yorkshire Police confirmed. He joins four others—two 18-year-old women, a 19-year-old man, and a 17-year-old boy—who were arrested at a nearby address following the incident. All five remain in police custody as the investigation continues.

‘A hole in my heart that can never be filled’

The family of Chloe Watson Dransfield, who was from Gomersal in West Yorkshire, have paid moving tributes to their “princess”. In a statement, her mother said: “My beautiful princess Chloe. I cannot put into words how I feel that you are not here with me. You are my life, my world, my best friend… I cannot live without you.”

Describing her daughter as “stunning, confident, loyal, honest and my family-oriented princess”, she added: “When you walk into any room it lights up with your bubbly personality… There’s a big hole in my heart that can never be filled.”

Chloe’s father and other family members issued a separate statement, saying they were “utterly devastated”. They remembered her as “beautiful, full of joy, and had a wonderfully cheeky personality”, adding that she “embraced life with such happiness, and she had her whole future ahead of her”.

The teenager’s cousin, Shantelle Watson, has set up a GoFundMe page to help with funeral costs. She wrote that Chloe’s life was “taken in a flash over a boy” and that she was “16 years young” and “didn’t even make it to her 18th”. She described her as “so full of life, such an innocent, beautiful soul taken too soon”.

‘Her eyes were just blank’

Chloe was found unconscious with fatal stab wounds on Kennerleigh Avenue in the Austhorpe area of Leeds at approximately 5.55am on Saturday, March 28. Police were called and she was pronounced dead in hospital shortly afterwards.

Neighbour Wayne Mallows, 64, described how he was called to help by a dog walker and took over performing CPR from another resident while an ambulance was on loudspeaker. “I took over until the ambulance arrived 10 minutes later,” he said. “She had been stabbed in the back and there was quite a bit of blood. Her eyes were just blank.”

Family and neighbours have suggested the stabbing followed a dispute over a boy.

Appeal for information in high-crime area

Detective Chief Inspector James Entwistle, who is leading the investigation, said: “Our thoughts remain with Chloe’s family at this incredibly difficult time. Our specially-trained officers continue to provide them with support.” He appealed for anyone with information or relevant mobile phone footage to come forward, providing the investigation log number as 280 of March 28.

The killing occurred in an area with a notably high crime rate. Official statistics for the Austhorpe Road postcode sector show an overall crime rate of 1,216 incidents per 1,000 residents in the last 12 months, significantly above the local average. Violent crime in the area was recorded at 431.9 incidents per 1,000 people.

Chloe’s death is the latest in a series of fatal stabbings to shock Leeds in recent years. In November 2023, 15-year-old Alfie Lewis was fatally stabbed near a school in Horsforth, leading to the murder conviction of a 14-year-old boy. In October 2025, 19-year-old Harry Abbot died after being stabbed in the city, an incident for which an 18-year-old girl was arrested on suspicion of murder.
