Three detained after woman dies in gunfire outside Sheffield bar

Three people have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 30-year-old woman died following a shooting outside a bar in Sheffield city centre in the early hours of Monday morning.

South Yorkshire Police said two men, both aged 30, and a 32-year-old woman were detained in connection with the incident. One of the men and the woman were arrested near Stockport in Greater Manchester during the early hours of Monday, while the second man was arrested in Sheffield. All three remain in police custody for questioning.

The shooting happened outside the One Four One bar on West Street shortly before 2.45am on Monday, May 25. Officers attended and found the woman with serious injuries. She was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital, where she later died. Formal identification has not yet taken place, but detectives said her family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

Police said they recovered evidence at the scene “consistent with a firearms discharge”. A motorcycle was visible within the cordon, though its connection to the incident has not been confirmed. West Street and surrounding roads — including Eldon Street, Westhill Lane and part of Orange Street — were closed, causing significant disruption to traffic and public transport, including the suspension of tram services in the area.

Police investigation and appeal

The force’s Major Crime Team is leading the investigation. Assistant Chief Constable Colin McFarlane, who has over 30 years of policing experience and has served as a Firearms Commander for 15 years, described the death as “a devastating incident which has resulted in the death of a young woman while on a night out during the bank holiday weekend in Sheffield”.

He added: “First and foremost, our thoughts are with her family and everyone who knew and loved her.

“Our officers have been working extremely hard to piece together the events surrounding the shooting. While our investigation is in its early stages, we will continue to have a significant presence at the scene in the area today and in the coming days.

“Bank holidays are one of the busiest times of the year, and we know that there were people in the area around West Street and Eldon Street who saw what happened or know who is responsible.

“If this is you, please share what you know either directly to us, or completely anonymously via Crimestoppers. Now is not the time to stay silent.

“Gun crime causes unbearable tragedy and the victim and her family deserve answers. We will work tirelessly to provide these answers and to put those responsible before the courts.”

South Yorkshire’s Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Kilvinder Vigurs, also expressed deep sadness at the death and offered heartfelt thoughts to the victim’s family and friends.

Police are urging anyone who was in the West Street and Eldon Street area around the time of the incident — particularly anyone with mobile phone footage, dashcam footage or private CCTV — to come forward. Information can be reported online via the force’s website, by calling 101, or anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or its website. Anyone providing information should quote incident number 135 of May 25, 2026.

West Street is known as a hub of nightlife in Sheffield, popular with university students and locals, and was especially busy over the bank holiday weekend. The One Four One bar had previously been granted permission in July 2024 to remain open until 4am daily, despite noise complaints from a local resident. The resident had raised concerns about noise levels, the bar’s handling of complaints and soundproofing. Some online comments from October 2023 also alleged “dodgy behaviour” regarding the scanning and retention of passports at the venue, questioning whether this breached privacy and GDPR rules — though the force has not indicated any link between those allegations and Monday’s shooting.

According to the latest available figures, Sheffield’s overall crime rate as of March 2026 stood at 84 crimes per 1,000 people — 3.3 per cent lower than the South Yorkshire rate but 17 per cent higher than the national average for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Violent crime remains the most common offence type in the city. Assistant Chief Constable McFarlane said: “Gun crime causes unbearable tragedy.”
