Met Police launches investigation into fatal stabbing outside Westminster Abbey

A 26-year-old man has died after being stabbed on a street close to Parliament Square in central London on Friday night, prompting a Metropolitan Police murder investigation.

Officers were called to Abbey Orchard Street, Westminster, at 10.17pm on March 27 and arrived at the scene within three minutes. The victim was given first aid by responding officers before being taken to an ambulance, where he was pronounced dead. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

A post-mortem examination will be held in due course, while the crime scene—where forensic tents were erected—remains under police guard near the historic Westminster Abbey.

Police appeal for witnesses after rapid response

Detective Superintendent Dean Lanfear, who is leading the investigation, emphasised the importance of public assistance. “We understand the concern this incident may cause,” he said. “Officers are on patrol in the area to provide a visual deterrent and to offer reassurance to residents.”

He issued a direct appeal: “If anyone saw or has any information about what happened last night, please contact police. Even the slightest bit of information can help.”

The Met has provided specific contact points for information: the public can call 101, quoting reference CAD 8270/27MAR, or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Investigators are also asking anyone with relevant dashcam or doorbell footage to upload it via the Major Incident Public Portal (MIPP). No arrests have been made at this early stage.

Recovery of CCTV footage from surrounding government buildings and residential blocks in the SW1 postcode is understood to be a key line of inquiry as detectives work to establish the circumstances and motive behind the attack.

The fatal stabbing occurred in a district of profound political and historical significance, flanked by the Palace of Westminster and Westminster Abbey. The area has long been subject to heightened security protocols, including airport-style checks at the parliamentary estate and visible policing, particularly during protests. Security reviews have previously focused on the potential for vehicle-borne attacks around Parliament Square.

This incident brings into sharp focus the ongoing challenge of knife crime in London, part of a broader national trend. Police have noted a pattern of spontaneous street confrontations in busy, tourist-heavy districts. The killing also recalls other serious incidents in the vicinity, including a terrorist attack in March 2017 outside the Palace of Westminster that involved a vehicle ramming and the stabbing of a police officer.

As the investigation continues, police are keeping an open mind while seeking to piece together the events that led to the young man’s death.
