Paedophile receives 15-year jail term for feigning disability to evade court appearance

A paedophile who faked being mute and wheelchair-bound in a bid to evade justice has been jailed for 15 years after his elaborate deception was exposed by the “not-so-covert double life” he and his brother were living.

John Siddell, 41, convinced psychiatrists he was unfit to stand trial by presenting himself as completely incapacitated – refusing to open his eyes, unable to hold his own head up and claiming he could not speak – while being investigated for sexually abusing three young boys between 2018 and 2021. His older brother James, 44, actively supported the pretence, even providing a statement to police alleging John had severe mobility issues that made the offences impossible.

How the deception was uncovered

The brothers’ scheme began to unravel when police gathered evidence from social media, mobile phone photos and their own home CCTV. The material, presented by prosecutor Claudia James at Leicester Crown Court, showed John Siddell living a strikingly different life from the one he performed for doctors.

Footage captured him walking unaided to an Elvis Presley night at a social club, attending a Newcastle United match, and taking selfies in which he smiled with his head up and eyes open – even posing with a pint of Guinness. In one clip he was filmed using his wheelchair like a “trolley” to move household items over a mile in June 2022.

Leicestershire Police’s lead investigator, Detective Constable Gibson, revealed that an officer had observed John Siddell “sat upright in his wheelchair communicating with James” before he “dramatically changed” his demeanour when arriving for a psychiatric assessment. A separate psychiatrist concluded in May 2024 that there was “no reliable basis” for finding Siddell unfit to stand trial.

The absurdity of the charade was further underlined by a hospital carer who looked after him in July 2024. In a statement read to the court, the carer described him as “the most verbal non-verbal person I have ever seen”.

John Siddell had originally been charged with 17 child sex offences in June 2022. Assessments in April and June 2023 found him unfit to plead, leading to a “trial of facts” hearing in March 2024 where a jury decided he had committed all 17 acts. However, after the deception was exposed, he pleaded guilty in September 2025 to 15 of those offences alongside both brothers admitting perverting the course of justice between November 2021 and August 2025.

The brothers did not attend their plea hearing in July last year – when it was claimed John Siddell had suffered a seizure and was taken to hospital – and they also failed to appear for their sentencing on Tuesday.

Victim impact and sentencing

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Keith Raynor described the brothers’ behaviour as “scheming and devious”, saying: “They misrepresented John Siddell’s mental and physical abilities, the behaviour of both of them entirely corrupting and undermining the course of justice.” He also noted that John Siddell had occupied a hospital bed for a fortnight “at the taxpayers’ expense” while the NHS was under pressure.

John Siddell received a total of 15 years in prison – 11 years and 10 months for the child sex offences plus three years and two months for perverting the course of justice – with a further two-year extended licence period. He was also made subject to a 20-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order. James Siddell was jailed for two years and nine months (33 months).

A victim impact statement read to the court on behalf of the three boys – aged eight, ten and 13 at the time the offences were reported – said they are “still dealing with the effects of the abuse”. One of the victims wrote a poem expressing confusion, pain and a need for order. Another suffered anger issues that led to school exclusion and self-imposed isolation, while the third experienced nightmares, bed-wetting and loss of appetite.

Nicola Potts, a district Crown Prosecutor for the CPS East Midlands rape and serious sexual offences team, said: “While much of the attention in this case will be the lies and antics of the Siddell brothers, at the heart of this are three sexual abuse victims who had their childhood snatched from them by John Siddell’s cruel manipulation. His cynical lies and the support he received from James was a further insult to these victims.”

In mitigation, John Siddell’s barrister Jamie Adams told the court his client is a “very vulnerable and disadvantaged human being” diagnosed with epilepsy, autism and learning disabilities, adding that relatives had “exaggerated John’s ill-health throughout his life to get some financial benefit”. James Siddell’s barrister Nicholas Peacock said his client came from a “generationally dysfunctional family who largely survived on the benefits system”.
