Woman held over Wolverhampton house fire that killed two young children

A woman is in custody after two young boys died in a house fire in Wolverhampton. The victims, aged one and three, were pronounced dead at the scene on Mason Street shortly after fire crews arrived at around 8.30pm on Friday (April 24, 2026). The suspect, a woman in her 30s, was arrested on suspicion of causing or allowing the death of two children and remains in police custody.
Emergency response and rescue efforts
West Midlands Fire Service said its crews reached the property within five minutes of receiving reports. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the end-of-terrace house and rescued the two young children. Despite paramedics administering advanced life support at the scene, the boys could not be saved. Two other children and a woman were already outside the house when emergency services arrived. They were checked over by medics but did not need hospital treatment. The family of the deceased children is being supported by officers from West Midlands Police.
Investigation into the cause of the fire
Police have cordoned off the extensively damaged house and are working alongside the fire service to establish the exact cause of the blaze. On Saturday morning, forensic officers wearing protective equipment were seen entering the property. The walls of the house appeared scorched, two ground-floor windows were open and blackened with smoke, and photographs from the scene show a smashed window on the first floor and a mattress lying on the road outside, alongside debris. The cordon is expected to remain in place for some time, and officers thanked local residents for their understanding. CCTV footage from the area is being retrieved and reviewed, and door-to-door enquiries are ongoing. The tragedy has caused shock and distress in the community, and comes amid a series of serious incidents in Wolverhampton and the wider West Midlands region, adding to a sense of grief locally.
Police appeal and statements
Detective Chief Inspector Kylie Westlake, of the West Midlands Police public protection unit, described the incident as “truly tragic”. She said: “Our thoughts remain very much with those who loved the children who have been lost. We understand the shock and distress this awful incident will have caused to many people and we are working at pace to ascertain exactly what has happened. Officers have arrested a woman on suspicion of causing or allowing the death of two children. While we would ask people not to speculate about this or the wider incident, we would ask that anyone who can help with our enquiries, and who is yet to speak with us, to get in contact.” West Midlands Fire Service added in a statement: “Our thoughts are with the children’s loved ones and all those impacted by this heartbreaking incident.” Anyone with information is urged to call 101 or use the Live Chat service, quoting log 5640 of April 24.
