Wrexham University secures £22 million for new hub development

A £22 million project set to become Wrexham University’s largest ever single capital investment has cleared a major hurdle, with outline business case approval secured from the regional growth body Ambition North Wales.

The Wrexham Business Gateway, a landmark development at the heart of the campus, is now on track to begin construction next year, supported by a complex funding package drawn from multiple public bodies. Alongside the lead backing from Ambition North Wales, the project will receive over £7 million from the North Wales Growth Deal, £4 million from the North Wales Investment Zone, and £1.5 million from the Welsh Government’s Commission for Tertiary Education and Research, with match funding provided by the university itself.

A Hub for Enterprise and Innovation

Designed to connect city, campus, and community, the building is conceived as a visible civic and economic hub. Its flexible, future-facing facilities are specifically designed to foster collaboration and commercial growth. These will include dedicated space for start-ups and business incubation, alongside innovation and digital labs intended to help existing firms develop new products and processes.

Leadership and professional development programmes will run alongside public-facing clinics, where businesses can access expertise. The Gateway will also feature areas for events, collaboration, and community engagement, creating a focal point for knowledge exchange. Furthermore, it will become the new home of Wrexham Business School, centralising business education within this ecosystem of enterprise.

Professor Joe Yates, vice-chancellor of Wrexham University, said the project was “a platform for transformation,” connecting education with enterprise. Dr Ruth Slater, dean of the Business School, added that it would play a vital role in “developing regional talent and supporting enterprise.”

Strategic Partnerships and Regional Ambition

The project has been developed in close collaboration with a network of regional partners, including employers, civic organisations, public services, and Wrexham AFC. This aligns with the university’s stated aim to act as an “anchor institution” for the region and is a flagship component of its wider “Campus 2030” vision to become a world-leading, modern civic university.

Its funding structure underscores a concerted regional strategy. The £4 million contribution from the North Wales Investment Zone—a 10-year, £160 million UK and Welsh Government programme—highlights a focus on supporting high-value manufacturing and advanced industries. Meanwhile, the larger Growth Deal funding ties the Gateway to a regional plan aiming to generate over £1 billion of investment and create more than 4,000 jobs across North Wales.

Cllr Mark Pritchard, Chair of Ambition North Wales, stated that the combined funding from the Growth Deal and the Investment Zone “demonstrates our regional collaboration in action.”

Paul Moran, Capital Projects Manager at Wrexham University, who has overseen the development, said the university worked closely with partners “to create a space where students, businesses, and the wider community can thrive.” Main contractor Wynne Construction has been appointed to deliver the building, which is expected to open in September 2028.

Projected Economic Impact

The university expects the Business Gateway to deliver significant and lasting economic value. It is projected to create over 130 new jobs and contribute between £77 million and £94 million to the regional economy.

By providing facilities and collaborative space aimed at helping businesses innovate and scale, the Gateway is designed to attract further private investment. It aims to address regional challenges around productivity and specialist skills, with a focus on growth areas like artificial intelligence. The university states the development will support job creation, skills development, and business growth, helping to “future-proof” the regional economy.
