Manchester United host Aston Villa in live Premier League top-four battle

Two clubs level on points and locked in a desperate fight for Champions League football meet at Old Trafford this afternoon, in a match overshadowed by intense speculation over who will be in the home dugout next season.

Manchester United host Aston Villa with both sides tied on 51 points in the Premier League, separated only by United’s superior goal difference. With Arsenal runaway leaders on 70 points and Manchester City second on 61, this clash is pivotal in the battle for a top-four finish, with Chelsea and Liverpool hovering just three points behind the duo.

Carrick’s audition amid United’s manager hunt

The home side are led by interim manager Michael Carrick, who has overseen a climb to third since replacing Ruben Amorim in January. Despite this, his long-term future is unclear. Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has offered only cryptic comments on the matter, and research indicates the club has already shortlisted five potential permanent successors.

Intriguingly, one of those named candidates will be in the opposition technical area today. Unai Emery, who just celebrated his 100th win as Villa manager faster than any predecessor, is under consideration. His pedigree includes four Europa League wins, though some at Old Trafford reportedly harbour doubts about his tactical control. Pundit Jamie Carragher has publicly championed Emery as a “perfect” candidate for the United job.

Other names on United’s reported shortlist include Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola, Roberto De Zerbi, and Julian Nagelsmann, the latter having expressed openness to the role after the 2026 World Cup. Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is not in the frame.

Team news: Mount returns for United

On the pitch, Manchester United receive a boost with Mason Mount set to return to the squad after a two-month injury absence. Defender Noussair Mazraoui is also expected to be fit despite a knock. They remain without Lisandro Martínez (calf), Matthijs de Ligt, and Patrick Dorgu.

United’s likely lineup is reported to feature Lammens in goal, with a defence of Dalot, Yoro, Maguire, and Shaw. Casemiro and Mainoo could anchor midfield, supporting an attack of Amad, Bruno Fernandes, and Bryan Mbeumo, with Matheus Cunha leading the line. Some reports suggest Mbeumo, who has nine league goals this season, may instead play centrally.

Aston Villa arrive having secured a 1-0 Europa League win in Lille on Thursday. Captain John McGinn is back from injury and expected to start or be on the bench, with Ross Barkley and Alysson also available. Matty Cash is a doubt and faces a late test, while Pau Torres and Douglas Luiz are set to be among the substitutes. The absentees include the ineligible Jadon Sancho, Boubacar Kamara, and Youri Tielemans.

Villa’s probable starting eleven is Martínez; Bogarde, Konsa, Mings, Digne; Onana, Barkley, McGinn; Rogers, Buendía, and Ollie Watkins, who has eight Premier League goals this term.

Historical weight and current form

The venue itself adds to the occasion. Old Trafford, the ‘Theatre of Dreams’, is the UK’s largest club football stadium with a capacity of 74,310. Historically, it has been a unhappy ground for Villa; Manchester United have won 107 of the 201 meetings between the sides, including 41 of 61 Premier League clashes. Villa’s last league double over United was in the 1954-55 season, though they did win this season’s reverse fixture 2-1 in December.

United come into the match having seen their unbeaten start under Carrick ended by a 2-1 defeat at Newcastle. They will rely on strong home form, having won their last four at Old Trafford under Carrick while scoring at least twice in each. Overall, they are on a run of scoring in 17 consecutive Premier League games, their best streak since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Aston Villa’s form in the league is less convincing, with just three wins in their last eleven outings, a stark contrast to their European consistency under Emery.

The match, refereed by Anthony Taylor, kicks off at 2pm GMT and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports in the UK, with coverage beginning at 1pm.
