NBA fan’s viral comment dubs Shaquille O’Neal ‘creepy horny uncle’ over interview

A viral NBA fan has apologised for calling Shaquille O’Neal “creepy”, walking back comments made after a high-pressure live television interview that followed her unexpected rise to internet fame.
The fan, known as Grace, issued a clarification on social media platform X, stating she was a “private person that has been thrown into the public eye unexpectedly”. She directly addressed her deleted post in which she likened the NBA Hall of Famer to a “creepy horny uncle”. “Shaq did absolutely nothing to make us uncomfortable and I do not view him as ‘creepy’ at all,” Grace wrote. She explained the remark was an attempt at a joke about her “flustered reaction in the midst of a high pressure situation,” and expressed “nothing but admiration and appreciation for the host’s hospitality.”
The viral moment that started it all
The chain of events began during an Indiana Pacers game against the Brooklyn Nets on 9 April 2026, a match characterised as a blowout between two struggling Eastern Conference teams. Broadcast cameras captured Grace sitting beside her boyfriend, Michael, a dedicated Pacers fan who had secured the tickets last-minute. As Michael animatedly explained a point, Grace’s expression turned to exasperation before she was seen mouthing the words, “What the f*** are you talking about?”
The clip, instantly dubbed a “yapping” meme, spread rapidly online. Grace initially embraced the humour, posting on X: “IM CRYINGGGGGGGG I LOVE MY BOYFRIEND THIS IS JUST HOW WE TALK!!!!!!!!!!!!!” She later told Sports Illustrated that their debate, a regular feature of their four-year relationship, concerned “the academic rigor of a liberal arts education, and essentially how it can be updated for the current economic status and job market.” Michael confirmed the topic, calling such intellectual discussions their “love language.”
The high-pressure television interview
The couple’s new fame led to an invitation onto ESPN’s flagship programme, ‘Inside the NBA‘, for its final regular-season broadcast on the network on 13 April 2026. The interview took a sharp turn when analyst Shaquille O’Neal, upon learning they were not engaged, made a spontaneous and persistent offer. “I’ll buy the engagement ring,” O’Neal said, repeatedly urging Michael to “get on your knee right now.”
Pacers TV had these fans on the broadcast, and she is NOT having it 😂

The couple reacted with awkward laughter. Michael attempted to deflect by joking that he would only propose if the entire ‘Inside the NBA’ crew attended the wedding, while Grace interjected, “I didn’t agree to this!” O’Neal expressed scepticism about their story for the original viral moment, telling Michael, “I love you… but I don’t believe that story,” and jokingly suggesting his “white smile” was a sign of a “cover-up.” Grace later admitted her familiarity with Shaq stemmed more from his ‘Icy Hot’ advertisements than his basketball career, though Michael was a major fan of the show.
O’Neal has previously expressed confidence that the show’s core chemistry will remain unchanged following its move from TNT to ESPN, stating the team would continue to “have fun, do what we do… and just try to make people laugh.” He has, however, faced criticism for past comments, including remarks in 2024 about WNBA player Angel Reese’s outfit, which some perceived as inappropriate. Reese has since described O’Neal as a “father figure”.
From criticism to clarification
After the interview, Grace took to X with a far less diplomatic assessment. In a now-deleted post, she wrote: “Shaq was like a creepy horny uncle trying to embarrass his nephew and I went along with it until the bit got embarrassing.” She added that she was “ready to be done with Sports people,” whom she found “generally exhausting and, forgive me for saying so, I mean this respectfully, not smart in the ways that matter to me.”
As that comment gained traction, she removed it and posted her detailed apology. She reiterated that she and Michael had “a wonderful time on the show” and closed her statement with, “Go Pacers.” O’Neal, who has commented on the Pacers’ performances in the past, including expressing surprise at a playoff win in 2025, has not publicly responded to the incident.
