Piers Morgan, John Terry and Simon Jordan unite to brand Gary Lineker boring in World Cup podcast dispute

Piers Morgan has launched a fresh verbal volley at Gary Lineker, branding his own upcoming World Cup podcast with a tagline that takes direct aim at the former England striker’s phenomenally successful show. The promotional poster for Morgan’s new programme, unveiled on X, features the slogan “The Rest is Boring” — a scarcely veiled dig at Lineker’s hit podcast The Rest is Football.

The poster shows Morgan flanked by his co-hosts for the series: Chelsea legend John Terry and talkSPORT presenter Simon Jordan. The tagline is a deliberate reference to Lineker’s audio empire, which will itself be moving to Netflix for daily episodes throughout the 2026 World Cup, beginning on the same day — June 8 — that Morgan’s show kicks off.

World Cup Uncensored: The new podcast challenger

Morgan’s programme, titled World Cup Uncensored, will be available on YouTube, Spotify and Apple Podcasts from June 8. The show is an extension of his existing Uncensored brand, which has already branched beyond news and current affairs into sports commentary. Morgan described the format as one that will run throughout the tournament, featuring debate, analysis and fan reaction from a studio. The line-up also includes a rotating cast of pundits and football fan creators, with former Everton and Nottingham Forest manager Sean Dyche confirmed to offer analysis drawn from his managerial experience.

Morgan has framed the show as a no-holds-barred alternative to more polished rivals. “If the fans are talking about it, we’ll be debating it,” he said. “No preaching, no monologues, no turtlenecks. Just honest opinions.” He added that he knows Jordan and Terry have strong opinions and a genuine love for the game, and they will bring their “Uncensored views” to the coverage. Terry, a UEFA Pro Licence coach and former England captain, will draw on his tactical expertise, while Jordan, known for his unfiltered style as host of Up Front with Simon Jordan and co-host of talkSPORT’s White & Jordan Show, is expected to provide robust debate.

The Lineker connection — and the ‘banter’ defence

The tagline “The Rest is Boring” is an unmistakable swipe at The Rest is Football, which is recognised as one of the world’s biggest sports podcasts, boasting more than seven million monthly streams. Lineker, alongside Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, will host daily video episodes from a New York studio for Netflix during the World Cup, featuring game analysis, special guests and interviews with reporters embedded in the England camp and fan zones. Netflix, which is expanding its sports content, has added the show to a roster that includes The Bill Simmons Podcast, Pardon My Take and Spittin’ Chiclets, describing its offering as an “all-access deep dive into the Netflix Sports universe.”

According to The Telegraph, Morgan’s advert has not been well received by some members of Lineker’s Goalhanger podcast team, ahead of the show’s New York launch next week. But Morgan was quick to play down any genuine animosity. “I would find it very, very hard to believe that Gary, in particular, wouldn’t have had a little chuckle,” he told the publication. “We’re good mates.” He added: “Of course, if they took it over-seriously, it would be reflecting, perhaps, the accuracy of the joke. I know Gary really well. I’ve watched what they’ve been doing. I’ve got a lot of respect for it. I think it is the future. I think there’s plenty of room for both of us. But, as he would know, a little bit of banter goes a long way in football.” He even suggested a potential showdown, saying: “We may have a sort of ‘High Noon’ with me and Gary in Times Square.”

The two media figures have a long history of public spats, spanning football, politics and personal matters, and have even traded nicknames — “Jugs” for Lineker and “Tubbs” for Morgan. Despite the online rancour, they have occasionally been seen enjoying each other’s company, including at shared dinners. Morgan’s current jibe is the latest chapter in that complicated relationship, timed to coincide with both men launching competing World Cup audio projects on the same day.

The broader podcast landscape underscores the stakes. Sports podcasts now account for more than 20 per cent of the UK market, with advertising expenditure rising sharply year on year. Video podcasting, in particular, has exploded — the UK is a global leader in consumers who watch podcast episodes — and platforms such as YouTube are critical for discovery and engagement. Goalhanger, Lineker’s production company, has seen “explosive” growth after moving all its shows to YouTube, and produces a range of history, politics and sport podcasts. Morgan, meanwhile, is relying on the strength of his Uncensored brand and the drawing power of Terry and Jordan to carve out a share of the World Cup audience.

John Terry has been increasing his media footprint. He has appeared on The Joy of Football Podcast, RunPod and The Obi One Podcast with Jon Obi Mikel, and reports from March 2025 suggested he was planning to launch his own football podcast, potentially with Jose Mourinho as a first guest — a move that would have put him in direct competition with Rio Ferdinand’s show. Terry has also courted controversy: in March 2026, Simon Jordan publicly defended him after criticism over his apparent support of Rupert Lowe’s stance on a proposed burqa ban and calls to ban the burqa in the UK.

Morgan’s venture is not simply a one-off gimmick. It is a fully fledged brand extension designed to capitalise on the World Cup’s global audience, with a mix of studio analysis, punditry and fan engagement. The confirmation of Sean Dyche as a contributor adds a layer of managerial insight that contrasts with the more relaxed, personality-driven format of Lineker’s show. Whether listeners will choose “honest opinions” over the established chemistry of Lineker, Shearer and Richards remains to be seen, but Morgan has ensured that the battle for World Cup ears — and eyeballs — will be fought with a very public, very personal edge.
