Surprise exhibition bout featuring Tyson and Mayweather sees date and venue disclosed

On April 25, 2026, the Democratic Republic of Congo will stage an exhibition boxing match that seeks to channel the spirit of one of the sport’s most iconic nights, as Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather Jr. agree to face one another in the ring.

The bout, first announced in September 2025 after a deal was sealed according to TMZ reports, is being promoted by CSI Sports and Fight Sports. Ring Magazine has confirmed that, after initially targeting a March date, the event is now set for April 25 in Central Africa.

In statements released at the time of the announcement, Tyson expressed his astonishment, telling TMZ: “This fight is something neither the world nor I ever thought would or could happen.” He added, “I still can’t believe Floyd wants to really do this. It’s going to be detrimental to his health, but he wants to do it, so it’s signed and it’s happening!” Mayweather responded by claiming his legacy remained untouchable, saying, “I’ve been doing this for 30 years and there hasn’t been a single fighter that can tarnish my legacy. This exhibition will give the fans what they want.”

The Contenders

Mike Tyson, who will turn 60 in June 2026, carries a professional record of 50 wins, 6 losses, and 2 no-contests, with 44 knockouts. He became the youngest heavyweight champion in history in 1986 and later regained undisputed status. However, his last professional outing on November 15, 2024, ended in a unanimous decision loss to YouTube personality Jake Paul, a performance that raised significant concerns about his health and conditioning. Tyson, who once competed around 220 pounds, has undergone considerable weight loss in recent years.

Floyd Mayweather Jr., approaching his 49th birthday in February 2026, boasts an unblemished 50-0 record with 27 knockouts, having won world titles in five weight classes. His last professional fight was on August 26, 2017, when he defeated UFC star Conor McGregor by technical knockout. Since then, Mayweather has remained active in exhibitions, facing opponents like online personality Logan Paul and John Gotti III, and maintains a reputation for being in peak physical shape.

A Deliberate Historical Echo

The location directly evokes the 1974 “Rumble in the Jungle” between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, an event promoted by Don King and financed by then-dictator Mobutu Sese Seko to draw global attention to Zaire. The accompanying “Zaire ’74” music festival highlighted Black pride and cultural exchange, cementing the fight’s status as a landmark beyond sport. Organisers of the Tyson-Mayweather bout are clearly aiming to tap into this symbolic legacy.

Commercial expectations are high, given the record-breaking viewership of Tyson’s previous exhibition. His November 2024 clash with Jake Paul attracted a reported 108 million viewers on Netflix, making it one of the most-streamed sporting events at the time. Early indications suggest this showdown between two legends could draw even greater interest.

Nevertheless, the fight proceeds under a cloud of concern for Tyson’s wellbeing, amplified by the stark weight and size discrepancy between the two men. Furthermore, numerous logistical details remain unresolved. Reports indicate that specifics such as glove size, round length, weight limits, and the exact venue within the Congo have yet to be finalised, with modified structures expected due to the fighters’ ages. The official broadcast partner and the bout’s sanctioning are also still unknown.
