Sintons agrees to take over Cumbrian practice

Newcastle-headquartered law firm Sintons has acquired the specialist practice Cumbria Employment Solicitors, in a move that significantly extends its footprint across the North of England and bolsters its employment law offering with what it describes as “heavyweight legal talent.”
Acquisition and Immediate Integration
The deal will see Michael Bauer, the founder and partner of Cumbria Employment Solicitors, and his entire team integrate fully into Sintons’ employment law department. Bauer’s firm has been established for over 18 years, operating from Penrith and serving clients across Cumbria with a practice dedicated exclusively to employment law. Bauer himself brings nearly 25 years of specialist experience, including a period serving as a part-time Employment Judge, which provides a unique perspective on tribunal proceedings.
Christopher Welch, the managing partner of Sintons, stated that the acquisition was a strategic step in the firm’s ongoing growth. “This isn’t just a talent acquisition; this is part of our strategic drive to expand into different geographic regions by partnering with people who have a proven track record whilst sharing our values of client excellence,” he said. He added that his initial conversations with Bauer revealed a shared passion for client service and deep regional knowledge.
Strategic Growth in a Consolidating Market
For Sintons, a firm with origins dating back to 1896, this acquisition is the latest step in a period of sustained expansion. Earlier this year, the firm reported record revenues of £19.3m, a 6.5% increase, and grew its workforce to 180 people. It has also invested heavily in its modern head office, The Cube on Barrack Road in Newcastle, and expanded its geographic presence with offices in York, Leeds, and London.
The move aligns with broader market trends, where consolidation within the UK legal sector is accelerating. Reports indicate over 150 law firm mergers took place in 2024, driven by factors including a “war for talent,” the need for greater resources, and succession planning for older firm owners. Regional consolidators like Sintons are increasingly active, using acquisitions to gain market share and attract specialist teams. Private equity investment is also reshaping the landscape, introducing new capital and competitive dynamics.

Sintons’ rationale extends beyond simple geography. By bringing in a tightly-focused, highly-regarded team like Bauer’s, the firm is acquiring deep, niche expertise and a respected brand in Cumbria. This allows for immediate credibility and client base in a new region, fulfilling a strategic aim of growing through partnership with firms that share its client-centric ethos, which is reflected in its Investors in People Gold accreditation and consistent client satisfaction ratings averaging 4.9 out of 5.
Expanded Service and Client Benefits
The integration is framed as mutually beneficial for the clients of both firms. For Cumbria Employment Solicitors’ clientele, which includes both employers and employees, the merger provides access to Sintons’ full suite of legal services across sectors such as corporate, personal injury, and private client law. Michael Bauer noted that joining a larger firm was a necessary step to compete at the highest level. “By joining with Sintons, we are giving our existing client base access to the range of services and to the expertise in other areas of law that only a firm of this stature can provide,” he said.
Conversely, Sintons’ clients gain from the infused specialist employment law experience and the strengthened regional presence in Cumbria. Bauer emphasised that the move would not come at the cost of personal service, stating the combined business would continue delivering the “excellent, and personal, service for which we are known.” The acquisition follows Sintons’ continued growth in Yorkshire, leading Christopher Welch to conclude that the firm is now “bigger, stronger, and more capable than ever.”
