Warner Music enters three-year accord to enhance music industry in North East

Warner Music UK has solidified a significant three-year partnership with Newcastle’s leading music agency Generator, marking a substantial commitment to developing the North East as a major hub for the music industry. The collaboration, announced today, centres on the creation of world-class studio facilities and aims to provide long-term opportunities for artists, producers, executives, and emerging talent across the region.
A cornerstone of the initiative is the development of new studios in the historic Coronation Building on Newcastle’s Quayside, under the working title “Warner Music Newcastle.” According to the partnership plans, which have been submitted for planning approval, the facility will include recording studios, editing suites, podcasting studios, and collaborative spaces for creative content development. Construction is underway, with an expected opening in April 2026.
The investment builds upon a period of remarkable momentum for the North East’s music economy. The region recently hosted both the MOBO Awards and the Mercury Prize, with the Mercury ceremony alone providing a £1.4 million boost to the local economy. Data underscoring the area’s creative output reveals that artists from the North East have amassed over 12 billion streams in the UK since 2014.
Simon Robson, President for Recorded Music in EMEA at Warner Music Group, stated: “The North has always been a powerhouse of creativity, producing some of the most iconic music in history. We’re proud to be continuing its legacy with Generator by investing in the North’s grassroots music communities. It’s not just about finding the next big star, it’s about contributing towards a better system where the next generation of artists and executives can grow, evolve, and lead in the North throughout their careers.”
Mick Ross, CEO of Generator, emphasised the regional focus: “Right now, the world is looking to the North. The creativity coming out of this region is extraordinary, and it deserves national and global visibility. This partnership deepens the link between our talent and the wider industry, making it possible for artists to build successful careers without leaving the region.”
The partnership will also work with colleges, universities, and music education providers to establish clearer pathways from the classroom into a wide range of industry careers, including artists, engineers, producers, songwriters, and music entrepreneurs. A key objective is to provide regional talent with direct access to industry teams and expertise traditionally based in London.
Political leaders have strongly endorsed the move. North East Mayor Kim McGuinness, who has been instrumental in securing a £25 million fund to support local talent and creative businesses, said: “This is such an important moment for North East musicians. Seeing world-leading performers recording their music right here in the region will inspire our next generation of artists. This is about putting the North East on the world music map, and opening up the opportunities that it’ll bring.”
Newcastle City Council leader Karen Kilgour added: “It’s incredible to see a project like this coming to life and giving our emerging talent the tools, networks, and industry exposure they deserve. The creative potential here is huge, we’ve seen that during the Mobos and the Mercury Prize. This partnership is another fantastic step towards removing barriers and making sure local people can realise their dreams right here in the North East.”
The project is anticipated to generate considerable economic benefits for the region, including job creation for music makers, production assistants, engineers, photographers, and filmmakers, potentially generating millions in annual income. Generator, established for over 30 years, has a proven track record of nurturing talent from emerging musicians to chart-topping artists like Sam Fender and Nadine Shah. It launched its own music label in partnership with EMI North in 2023 to provide a direct route into the industry for North East artists.
This venture forms part of Warner Music Group’s broader strategy to expand its footprint beyond London. As one of the global “Big Three” recording companies, Warner has a history of strategic investments, including a recent joint venture with Bain Capital to invest up to $1.2 billion in music catalogues. Further details regarding Warner Music’s specific label activity in the region are expected to be announced in Spring 2026, with more information on the partnership’s initiatives to follow in the coming weeks.
