Free London exhibit to showcase Outlander costumes

A free exhibition of costumes and props from the fantasy history television series Outlander is to open in central London next month, offering fans a chance to see the intricate garments and set pieces before they go under the hammer.

London exhibition: a free preview for bidders and fans alike

The display will be held at Bonhams on New Bond Street from Monday 20th July to Tuesday 4th August 2026. It is open Monday to Friday between 10am and 4pm, with additional hours on Sunday 2nd August from midday until 4pm. Admission is free, although tickets must be booked in advance.

Officially, the exhibition is intended for potential buyers who wish to inspect the lots ahead of the auction. However, Bonhams has confirmed that the event is open to everyone, meaning any fan of the show can walk through and admire the items — and perhaps sigh over the prices they are expected to fetch. A printed catalogue is also available for purchase.

The auction house, which previously handled successful sales for The Crown and Downton Abbey, is staging the event to coincide with the broadcast of the eighth and final season of Outlander. The live auction will take place at the same New Bond Street address on Wednesday 5th August 2026, with a separate online auction running from Monday 20th July to Thursday 6th August.

From Claire’s red dress to Jamie’s Culloden costume: what is on offer

Among the most notable lots is Claire’s “Red Dress” (a toile, or mock-up, of the striking ball gown from Season 2, Episode 2, titled “Not in Scotland Anymore”). The dress was inspired by Dior’s 1940s “New Look” and became a focal point of the Season 2 advertising campaign; costume designer Terry Dresbach described it as “scandalous, powerful and sensual”. It carries an estimate of £3,000 to £5,000.

Other costumes include Jamie Fraser’s Culloden outfit worn in Season 3, Episode 1 (“The Battle Joined”), estimated at £1,500–£2,000, and Claire’s white dress from the moment she travels through the standing stones in Season 1, also estimated at £1,500–£2,000. Brianna’s 18th-century wedding dress from Season 5, Episode 1 (“The Fiery Cross”) is valued at £2,500–£3,500, while Claire’s self-constructed “Bat Suit” from Season 3, Episode 5 (“Freedom & Whisky”) bears the same estimate. Claire’s “Peacock Dress” from Season 7, Episode 11 (“A Hundredweight of Stones”) is pegged at £1,500–£2,000, and her arisaid from Seasons 1 and 2 at £1,000–£1,500.

For fans of the show’s antagonists, Black Jack Randall’s British military uniform — the “Redcoat” worn at the Battle of Culloden in Season 3, Episode 1 — is estimated at £1,000–£1,500, and his brown satin suit from Season 2, Episode 12 (“The Hail Mary”) at £600–£800. Geillis Duncan’s “Beltane Dress” from Season 1, Episode 4 (“The Gathering”) is valued at £800–£1,200, and Claire’s juggler costume from Season 1, Episode 14 (“The Search”) at £600–£800. John Grey’s velvet suit with oxblood waistcoat from Season 5, Episode 6 (“Better to Marry Than Burn”) carries a £600–£800 estimate.

Several set pieces and props are also up for sale. Geillis Duncan’s still room set panels — fifteen painted panels from Season 1, Episode 3 (“The Way Out”) — are estimated at £3,000–£5,000, matching the estimate for King Louis’s Versailles apartment set doors, four panelled doors from Season 2, Episode 7 (“Faith”). Jamie and Claire’s wedding night ensemble, worn by Claire in Season 1, Episode 7 (“The Wedding”), is valued at £2,500–£3,500. Other items include the dragonfly in amber prop (used across Seasons 1, 2 and 3, estimate £800–£1,200), a large clapperboard used in production (£1,000–£1,500), a painted Scottish standard first seen in Season 3, Episode 4 (“Of Lost Things”, £800–£1,200), and a carved wooden snake used by Jamie Fraser in Seasons 1 and 2 (£800–£1,200).

Prospective buyers should note that not all items on display are necessarily “hero” or screen-worn props and costumes; the full catalogue should be consulted for detailed information on each lot.

Edinburgh exhibition offers an earlier chance to view

Before the London event, Bonhams will host a free exhibition in Edinburgh from Tuesday 26th May to Sunday 31st May 2026 at its saleroom on Melville Crescent. Admission is free but, as with the London display, tickets must be booked in advance. This earlier showing gives fans in Scotland — where the series is primarily filmed — a chance to see the items before they travel south.

The Outlander television series, based on Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling books, follows Claire Fraser, a former Second World War nurse who travels through a mysterious stone circle to 18th-century Scotland, where she falls in love with Highland warrior Jamie Fraser. The story has transported audiences from the rugged Scottish Highlands to the streets of Paris, the Caribbean and colonial North Carolina. The first book was published in 1991 (released as Cross Stitch in the UK), and the series has since sold more than 50 million copies worldwide. Nine of a planned ten volumes have been published to date.

The television adaptation, developed by Ronald D. Moore, premiered on Starz on 9th August 2014 and is produced by Sony Pictures Television. After eight seasons, the finale aired in May 2026. A prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, focusing on the parents of Jamie and Claire, premiered in August 2025.

The show’s costumes are renowned for their craftsmanship. Terry Dresbach, costume designer for the first four seasons, worked from scratch because period garments were not available to rent. She collaborated with co-costume designer Nina Ayres for Season 4, and the department created thousands of garments, often blending historical accuracy with the characters’ own origins — Claire’s 1940s sensibilities, for example, influenced her 18th-century attire. Filming locations across Scotland include Doune Castle (used as Castle Leoch), Blackness Castle (Fort William), Midhope Castle (Lallybroch), Falkland (1940s Inverness), Culross (Cranesmuir), Culloden Battlefield, Clava Cairns (the inspiration for the Craigh na Dun standing stones), the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh’s Royal Mile and Old Town, as well as Glencoe, Kinloch Rannoch and Rannoch Moor.

The Edinburgh exhibition at Bonhams will run from 26th to 31st May, after which the London exhibition opens on 20th July, followed by the live auction on 5th August.
