Butcher convicted of ex-girlfriend’s murder after halving body and garden burial

A Polish national has been convicted of murdering her girlfriend and concealing the body in a Derby garden more than a decade ago, as noted by The Independent.

Anna Podedworna, 40, was found guilty at Derby Crown Court of killing Izabela Zablocka, a 30-year-old mother, in 2010. The court heard that Podedworna cut Ms Zablocka in half with a kitchen knife, trussed her body “like a chicken” with electrical tape, and placed the remains in bin bags.

Prosecutor Gordon Aspden KC said the victim’s remains were buried in a “filthy, makeshift grave” under concrete hardstanding in the garden of a terraced house on Princes Street, Normanton. The property was shared by the couple after they moved to the UK from Poland together.

Ms Zablocka was reported missing to police in August 2010 after losing contact with her family. Her remains were only discovered in June of last year after a police search.

The court was told that Podedworna contacted the police by email last year, which led to the investigation. Mr Aspden said “mounting pressure” caused the defendant to “crack” when a Polish television journalist flew to the UK to interview her.

The convicted murderer is scheduled to be sentenced at Derby Crown Court on Wednesday.
