Murder probe by police after man fatally stabbed in south-east London

A man has died after a stabbing in Crystal Palace, with a second man now arrested on suspicion of murder as detectives launch a fast-moving investigation into the early-morning attack.

The deceased, believed to be in his 30s, was found with stab wounds in the Westow Hill area after police were called by the London Ambulance Service at 3:39am on Sunday. Despite efforts from paramedics and officers, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Minutes earlier, emergency crews had been dispatched to the same location following reports of a stabbing. Officers discovered a 30-year-old man suffering from serious injuries. He received treatment at the scene before being taken to hospital, where his condition has been described as neither life-threatening nor life-changing. That man has now been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

Police response and investigation

Detective Chief Inspector Sarah Lee, who is leading the murder inquiry, said: “Our officers responded quickly alongside the London Ambulance Service who did everything possible to help the victim. This is a fast-moving investigation and residents in Crystal Palace will continue to notice an extensive police presence today as our inquiries continue.”

The Metropolitan Police have established multiple crime scenes in the Westow Hill area, and forensic teams are conducting detailed examinations. Officers are reviewing CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses as they work to establish the circumstances that led to the fatal confrontation.

Westow Hill has seen violent incidents in the past. In February 2025, the road was closed following a stabbing in which a man sustained injuries to his arm and torso. In June 2023, a murder investigation was launched after a 46-year-old man, believed to be homeless, was found stabbed to death in a car park near Crystal Palace. Further back, in March 2015, four people were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after two men were stabbed in Crystal Palace Park. Crime data for the most recent available period, April to June 2026, shows that Westow Hill postcodes SE19 1RX and SE19 1SB record medium crime rates of 185 and 192 crimes per thousand resident population annually, with violence and sexual offences the most common categories across Crystal Palace overall. In December 2025, the SE19 2DG area recorded 179 violent crime incidents out of 619 total crimes, while the SE19 9BX area logged 114 violent crime incidents out of 417 total crimes, alongside 116 incidents of anti-social behaviour.

The London Ambulance Service, which routinely responds to major trauma incidents across the capital, dispatched specialist resources to the scene. Their crews are trained to provide advanced medical care for knife wounds and can call on London’s Air Ambulance in the most serious cases, though it is not known whether that asset was deployed on Sunday. Trauma surgeons have previously described knife violence in the capital as endemic, with increasing numbers of young people involved, highlighting the need for prevention alongside emergency response.

Police are urging anyone with information or relevant footage to come forward. They can be contacted on 101, quoting CAD 1302/21JUN26. Information can also be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
