Police identify victim in fatal stabbing close to Birmingham primary school

A community in Birmingham has been left reeling after a violent midday attack on a residential street claimed the life of a 30-year-old man and left a second person injured.

The fatal stabbing occurred shortly after 12:06 PM on Tuesday, March 3, on Bridge Road in Alum Rock. West Midlands Police have since named the victim as Ali Alshmari, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 32-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident and remains in police custody. Detective Superintendent James Munro, who is leading the murder investigation, stated that police believe this to be a “contained” incident.

Chaotic Scene Near School

The attack unfolded in a public area close to both Our Lady of the Rosary and St Therese of Lisieux primary school and The Village Community Nursery. Witnesses described a chaotic and distressing scene, with some reporting that cardiopulmonary resuscitation was administered to Mr Alshmari in the street.

As a precautionary measure, both the school and the nursery were placed in lockdown. Detective Superintendent Munro acknowledged the location’s proximity to a school, confirming that officers would be meeting with local residents to discuss concerns and offer reassurance.

West Midlands Ambulance Service deployed multiple resources, including ambulances, paramedic officers, a MERIT trauma team and the air ambulance. Advanced life support was administered to the male victim. A woman also suffered injuries to her hand during the incident; she was treated for what were described as less serious, non-life-threatening injuries and has since been discharged from hospital.

Investigation and Community Appeal

In a statement, Detective Superintendent Munro said: “This is a tragic and violent attack which has cost the life of Mr Alshmari, and left a woman injured. We are doing everything we can to establish exactly what happened and why.”

Officers have recovered a knife believed to have been used in the attack, which is now undergoing forensic examination. Firearms officers, both uniformed and plain clothed, attended the scene—a routine response to a serious incident involving a weapon in a public place. The force has confirmed the incident is not being treated as terrorism-related.

The investigation is reviewing CCTV footage and speaking to people in the area. Police have praised the public’s “fantastic” response, noting that the sharing of CCTV, dashcam and mobile phone footage has been very helpful. A dedicated portal has been set up for the public to upload any relevant footage.

There were unconfirmed reports from the scene that a “good Samaritan” attempted to intervene by driving a vehicle at the alleged knifeman, after which the suspect fled into a nearby block of residential flats. A woman was reportedly seen at an upstairs window screaming with bloodied hands, stating a man was outside her door.

Some witnesses gave unconfirmed accounts describing the incident as interracial, alleging the attacker was a Black migrant and the victim was Afghan. Police have been reluctant to confirm such ethnic details at this stage.

Extra officers will be present in the Alum Rock area to provide a visible reassurance to residents, some of whom have expressed fear and concern, noting such events are uncommon locally.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact them on 101, quoting log number 2105 of March 3. Information can also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Authorities note that the victim, Ali Alshmari, is not to be confused with several other individuals who share similar names, including a leader in the UAE energy sector, an academic in Saudi Arabia, a Saudi footballer, and a person listed with the International Judo Federation.
