Video captures police officer hauling pregnant woman by her hair across floor

The Altercation
A visibly pregnant woman was violently thrown to the floor by a Dutch police officer during a confrontation at an asylum seeker centre in the town of Zeist, near Amsterdam. Viral footage shows an officer carrying a baton and leading a German Shepherd dog approach the woman, grab her by the arm and forcefully pull her forward before throwing her to the ground in the middle of a corridor. Seconds earlier, another officer had been speaking to her. A man understood to be the woman’s husband then rushed forward and attempted to punch the officer with the dog. The officer struck back, and several other officers quickly moved in as a melee broke out. A later clip appears to show the woman looking dazed as two officers drag her along the floor further down the corridor while people nearby watch on. At the same time, three other officers can be seen restraining the man on the ground as the confrontation continues.
Context and Police Response
Dutch police have confirmed that officers responded on the evening of May 19, 2026, at approximately 21:50, to reports of vandalism and threats involving a knife at the asylum seeker centre on Kampweg in Zeist. During the process of detaining a 30-year-old man, the visibly pregnant woman – later identified as his wife – became involved in a confrontation. The woman told local media that she approached the officers to ask if she could stay close to her husband while he was being detained. The man, named in some reports as Wesam Rida Fathi Miqdad (also referred to as Wesam Mekdad), is a Palestinian from Gaza who was reportedly facing deportation proceedings and had been subject to an entry ban. Social media posts attributed to him claim Dutch authorities viewed him as a danger to public order and sought to deport him to Egypt. The woman stated that her husband had been informed shortly before the incident that his brother had been killed in Gaza, leaving him under immense emotional distress and allegedly leading to a television set being destroyed.

Dutch police released a statement saying that officers acted appropriately in what they described as a dynamic and high-risk situation, and that they acted quickly to ensure the safety of those present and themselves. They maintain that the footage shows only part of the incident and that they are carefully examining all facts and circumstances. An internal investigation has been launched to review the officers’ conduct and determine whether the force used was proportionate. Bodycam footage from the officers involved is being reviewed as standard procedure.

Aftermath and Investigation
The woman has alleged that the physical altercation caused her to go into premature labour and suffer severe health complications. She has since given birth to a healthy baby, according to reports. Dutch police have not officially confirmed her pregnancy in their statements, but the footage and media reports describe her as visibly pregnant. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and accusations of police brutality, particularly given the woman’s visible pregnancy. Civil rights advocates have questioned the necessity and proportionality of the force used. Some reports indicate that no action was taken by police until over ten days after the incident, when the video was uploaded to social media. The Dutch police investigation remains ongoing, with the review of bodycam footage expected to be decisive in recommending any disciplinary action. The man, who was later arrested, continues to face deportation proceedings.
