Arsenal face pressure, De Zerbi eyes Tottenham comeback and Union Berlin makes history

Bayern Munich have etched their name deeper into Bundesliga history, setting a new single-season scoring record with a ruthless 5-0 dismantling of St Pauli. Their 105th league goal of the campaign surpassed their own 101-goal benchmark set in the 1971-72 season, with Jamal Musiala, Leon Goretzka, and Michael Olise on target in a statement win that also extended their lead at the top to 12 points.
Elsewhere in Germany, the battle for Champions League qualification remains fierce. Bayer Leverkusen, captained by former Union Berlin midfielder Robert Andrich, kept their top-four hopes alive with a 1-0 win over Borussia Dortmund, courtesy of Andrich’s first-half strike.
Spanish strides and Italian shuffles
In Spain, Barcelona took a giant leap towards reclaiming the La Liga title with a commanding 4-1 derby win over Espanyol. Ferran Torres ended a 13-game goal drought with a first-half brace, both assisted by the prodigious Lamine Yamal, who later scored himself. The victory moved Barcelona nine points clear of rivals Real Madrid. Atlético Madrid, meanwhile, fell to a 2-1 defeat at Sevilla after manager Diego Simeone rotated his squad ahead of their crucial Champions League second leg against Barcelona.
The picture in Serie A saw significant movement in the race for the top four. AC Milan’s 3-0 home defeat to Udinese allowed Juventus to close the gap on them to just three points after a 1-0 win at Atalanta, secured by Jeremie Boga’s goal. Milan now sit nine points behind leaders Inter and only six above sixth-placed Roma.
Premier League ramifications
The weekend’s major shock reverberated from North London, where Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes suffered a severe blow with a 2-1 home defeat to Bournemouth. Manager Mikel Arteta labelled the result a “big punch in the face,” acknowledging his side’s lacklustre performance. The defeat means Manchester City can move within three points of the Gunners with a game in hand if they win their upcoming fixture against Chelsea.
At Tottenham, new manager Roberto De Zerbi is under immediate pressure to inspire an uptick in form, with the club warned of the financial perils of relegation. The task at Chelsea is more immediate, with midfielder Enzo Fernández ruled out of today’s clash against Manchester City.
City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, had earlier offered intriguing insight into winger Rayan Cherki, whom he described as “one of the most unbelievably talented players I have seen.” Guardiola praised the Frenchman’s ability to play under intense pressure “like he is in a friendly game,” but stressed the importance of him staying humble and working for the team.
A historic appointment in Berlin
Beyond the pitch, a landmark decision was made in the Bundesliga. Union Berlin have appointed Marie-Louise Eta as their interim head coach until the end of the season, making her the first woman to manage a men’s team in one of Europe’s top five leagues.
Eta, who holds a UEFA Pro Licence and previously played for Werder Bremen, replaces the dismissed Steffen Baumgart after a 3-1 defeat to Heidenheim left the club 11th in the table. Her appointment is the latest in a series of groundbreaking steps; she became the first female assistant coach in the Bundesliga when she joined Union’s staff in November 2023, and in January 2024 she became the first woman to lead a team from the touchline during a Bundesliga match, a 1-0 win over Darmstadt.
“Given the points gap in the lower half of the table, our place in the Bundesliga is not yet secure,” Eta stated upon her appointment. “I am delighted the club has entrusted me with this challenging task. One of Union’s strengths has always been, and remains, the ability to pull together in such situations. I am convinced that we will secure the crucial points.”
In other European action, the Swiss Super League match between Thun and Basel was postponed after a fire destroyed the first-team dressing room area at St Jakob-Park late on Friday. Club officials confirmed the blaze damaged kit, boots, and medical equipment, though no one was injured. The cause remains under investigation.
