Barcelona and Atletico Madrid reveal Champions League squad news and injury updates

Barcelona’s pursuit of a league and European double faces a severe early test in the Champions League quarter-finals, as they prepare to host Atletico Madrid at the Nou Camp with a mounting injury crisis threatening to derail their ambitions.
Barcelona’s Hamstring Crisis Deepens
The most significant blow for Hansi Flick is the loss of winger Raphinha, who suffered a hamstring injury while on international duty with Brazil. The club has confirmed he is expected to be sidelined for over a month, ruling him out of both legs of this quarter-final tie. Raphinha has returned to Barcelona to continue his rehabilitation, with a reported target return date of May 10 for El Clásico.
He is joined on the treatment table by Frenkie de Jong, who is recovering from a hamstring injury sustained in late February. The midfielder is expected to return to group training this week, but the first leg on April 8 will come too soon. Barcelona are hopeful he could be available for the second leg on April 14 or the derby against Espanyol on April 11.
Further depleting Flick’s options, young midfielder Marc Bernal sustained a Grade 1 ankle sprain during the recent La Liga meeting with Atletico and is expected to be out for 7-10 days, putting his participation in both European ties in doubt. Defender Andreas Christensen continues his longer-term rehabilitation from an ACL tear. In a minor relief, Ronald Araujo, who suffered a minor overload in his left hamstring, has been cleared and is available for the first leg.
Barcelona’s president, Joan Laporta, has previously complained to FIFA about player workload and injury risks during international breaks, a sentiment manager Hansi Flick has not publicly shared.
Atletico’s Key Absences in Goal and Midfield
Diego Simeone’s side have their own selection headaches, primarily concerning goalkeeper Jan Oblak. The Slovenian has been sidelined with a muscle injury sustained in March and, while he has returned to group training, his participation at the Nou Camp remains uncertain. There is a proposal within the club to delay his competitive return until this Champions League fixture to avoid setbacks, meaning Juan Musso is expected to start in goal.
In midfield, Pablo Barrios is definitely out with a thigh injury. However, Rodrigo Mendoza, who suffered a moderate ankle sprain in March, has resumed training and is preparing for the match.
Contrasting Form and Tactical Battle
The teams meet in starkly different form. Barcelona are in formidable shape, having won eight of their last nine matches across all competitions, including a 2-1 La Liga victory over Atletico just days ago. They remain unbeaten in their last 25 home games against the Madrid side.
In contrast, Atletico Madrid have lost their last three matches in all competitions, their worst run since December 2021, making their season increasingly reliant on cup success having already secured a place in the Copa del Rey final.
The tactical duel pits Flick’s proactive, possession-based philosophy—Barcelona average 66.5% possession in La Liga and excel at breaking defensive lines—against Simeone’s famed defensive solidity and tactical flexibility. Notably, while Barcelona hold the historical upper hand with 115 wins to Atletico’s 80 in 252 meetings, Simeone’s side have eliminated Barcelona in both of their previous Champions League quarter-final encounters.
Barcelona have yet to keep a clean sheet in this season’s Champions League, a vulnerability Atletico will aim to exploit. Flick’s team, however, has been one of Europe’s most effective at drawing offsides.
Predicted Lineups
With injuries forcing his hand, Hansi Flick is likely to field a Barcelona XI in a 4-3-3 formation: Garcia; Kounde, Araujo, Curbasi, Cancelo; Pedri, Garcia, Gavi; Yamal, Lewandowski, Rashford. The confirmed absentees are De Jong, Raphinha, and Christensen.
Atletico Madrid, also expected in a 4-4-2, could line up with: Musso; Molina, Le Normand, Hancko, Ruggeri; Simeone, Llorente, Cardoso, Lookman; Alvarez, Griezmann. Their injury list includes Oblak, Barrios, and Mendoza.
The winner of this quarter-final will face the victor of the tie between Sporting CP and Arsenal in the semi-finals, with the road to the final in Budapest on May 30, 2026, at stake. The match kicks off at 8pm BST on Wednesday, April 8, at the Nou Camp, broadcast live on TNT Sports in the UK.
