Michigan player hospitalised after medical emergency at Final Four practice

A University of Michigan basketball star was rushed to hospital from the team’s practice facility on Wednesday after suffering a severe allergic reaction, casting a shadow over the Wolverines’ preparations for the Final Four.

Junior guard Elliot Cadeau was taken on a stretcher, his head covered by a towel, and placed into an awaiting ambulance. The incident occurred as the top-seeded Wolverines were making final preparations to depart for Indianapolis, where they are scheduled to face No. 1 seed Arizona in the national semifinal on Saturday. The dramatic scene was captured on video by WWJ 950’s Jon Hewett.

In a statement, the Michigan basketball program confirmed the nature of the medical emergency. ‘Elliot alerted the medical staff that he may have had an allergic reaction to something that he ate,’ the team said. ‘The doctors evaluated Elliot and he is fine. Out of an abundance of caution, he is receiving medical supervision and will be traveling to Indianapolis later today.’

While the exact allergen was not identified, the rapid onset necessitating stretcher evacuation and hospital transport underscores the potential severity of such reactions. The team’s emphasis on “an abundance of caution” reflects standard protocol for a serious medical event, particularly with a crucial game days away.

A Vital Cog in a Historic Season

Cadeau’s health is of paramount importance to a Michigan team enjoying one of its greatest ever seasons. The Wolverines, under second-year head coach Dusty May, are 35-3—a program record for wins—and are making their ninth Final Four appearance, their third in the last decade.

The New Jersey native, who transferred from North Carolina last March, has been a linchpin in this success. The 6ft1 guard is averaging 10.2 points and 5.8 assists per game, earning All-Big Ten honorable mention and a spot on the NCAA tournament’s Midwest All-Region team. His role expanded significantly after a season-ending knee injury to key reserve guard LJ Cason in February, forcing Cadeau to play all but a handful of minutes each contest.

Coach Dusty May, the 2026 USBWA National Coach of the Year who previously led Florida Atlantic to the Final Four in 2023, has built a remarkably balanced squad. Six Wolverines average double-figures in scoring, a key factor in dominant tournament wins like their 95-62 Elite Eight victory over Tennessee. The team’s defensive anchor, 7-foot-3 center Aday Mara, has also set a new single-season blocks record for Michigan this year.

The program now stands two victories away from its first national championship since 1989, when Glen Rice led the team to the title. Rice set a tournament scoring record that year with 184 points, a feat the current high-powered Wolverines offense will look to honour as they continue their historic run, hoping for the swift and full recovery of their starting guard.
