Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, 15, notches 15-ball IPL fifty

In a breathtaking display of youthful audacity, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi blazed a 15-ball half-century to power the Rajasthan Royals to an emphatic eight-wicket victory over the Chennai Super Kings, sealing the win in just 12.1 overs.

A Record-Breaking Onslaught

The onslaught began from the first ball after Rajasthan, having won the toss, successfully restricted Chennai to 127 all out. Alongside established opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sooryavanshi executed a premeditated plan of pure aggression. The pair raced to 74 without loss in the six-over powerplay, a devastating assault that effectively decided the contest. “I think of defending but the plan was to decide the game in the powerplay as we’d restricted them to a low score,” Sooryavanshi confirmed post-match. “If the bowlers had bowled well in the powerplay then the game might have turned their way but we went all out.”

Sooryavanshi’s personal contribution was a whirlwind 52 from 17 deliveries, featuring five sixes and four fours, before he was dismissed with the score at 75. This 15-ball fifty is the third fastest in IPL history, a remarkable feat for a player who had turned 15 just days before the match on March 27. His blistering start is characteristic of a player who, in his debut IPL season last year, became the youngest centurion in the league’s history with a 35-ball hundred—also the fastest by an Indian.

The Rajasthan Royals’ faith in the prodigy is long-standing; the franchise has tracked him since he was 10 years old and invested heavily in his development. They signed him to a ₹1.1 crore contract at age 13, making him the youngest player to secure an IPL deal, and have consistently backed his fearless approach. Sooryavanshi credited head coach and Director of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara and his staff for this support. “They told me to read the situation well and back my game,” he said.

Bowling Foundation and Strategic Shifts

The platform for the chase was laid by a disciplined and penetrative bowling performance that reduced Chennai to 41 for 4 by the end of their powerplay. South African pace bowler Nandre Burger, named Player of the Match, led the charge with figures of 2 for 26, which included the wicket of former Royals captain Sanju Samson, traded to CSK in the off-season. He was ably supported by Jofra Archer and Ravindra Jadeja, who also took two wickets each, while debutant Brijesh Sharma impressed with 1 for 17.

The match, the opening fixture of the 2026 season for both sides, highlighted significant squad changes. Rajasthan are now captained by Riyan Parag, entering a post-Sanju Samson era, and feature all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja who was traded from Chennai. CSK, meanwhile, were without the injured MS Dhoni, ruled out for the season’s first two weeks with a calf strain.

Following Sooryavanshi’s dismissal, the chase was completed calmly by Jaiswal, who finished 38 not out, with Parag and Dhruv Jurel providing brief cameos. For Chennai, Anshul Kamboj was the only bowler to find any success, taking 2 for 27.

Rajasthan Royals will next face the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on Saturday, April 4. Chennai Super Kings, seeking to bounce back, host the Punjab Kings on Friday, April 3.
