Man critically injured after car hits several pedestrians in town centre

A red Vauxhall Astra struck multiple pedestrians in Arnold town centre in the early hours of Saturday morning, leaving one man with life-threatening injuries. The driver abandoned the vehicle at the scene and fled on foot, prompting a police search for a suspect believed to be a white man.

Incident details

Nottinghamshire Police said the collision occurred in Market Place, Arnold, at approximately 1:12am on Saturday, 9 May 2026. A number of people were struck by the car, with one victim sustaining life-threatening injuries. The red Vauxhall Astra, which shows signs of considerable damage, has been left within the police cordon at the scene.

The driver fled on foot immediately after the incident. Officers have identified a suspect, described as a white man, and are actively attempting to locate him.

Police investigation and search for suspect

Detective Chief Inspector Ruby Burrow, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “There is no indication at this stage of any ongoing threat to the wider public. However, we understand the incident will cause concern in the community.”

Officers are maintaining a visible presence at the scene to conduct further inquiries, speak with local residents, and offer reassurance. Michael Payne, MP for Gedling, said he is in close contact with the force and has urged residents not to speculate on the circumstances while the investigation is ongoing.

Significant road closures have been implemented in the town centre to facilitate the investigation. Market Place and the junctions connecting to Gedling Road, Derby Street, Hallams Lane, and Central Avenue are closed. Police said the closures will remain in place for some time, and motorists are advised to avoid the area. Bus operator Nottingham City Transport has confirmed diversions for some of its services due to the incident. Businesses in Market Place, including The Works and Specsavers, have been cordoned off as part of the police operation.

Arnold is a town in the Gedling borough of Nottinghamshire, approximately three miles north of Nottingham city centre.
