Two people knifed near Stratford Station as police detain suspect

Two men suffered stab wounds in Stratford yesterday afternoon after a violent altercation erupted on a busy road near the transport hub, prompting a significant emergency response and a rapid police arrest.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed they were called to Great Eastern Road at 1.50pm on Sunday, April 12, following reports of a fight. Officers arriving at the scene found two men, one in his 30s and one in his 40s, with knife injuries. Both were taken to hospital for treatment, with the force later stating their wounds had been assessed as non-life-changing.
The response involved forensic officers who conducted a detailed examination of the scene. An air ambulance was also deployed, landing in a school playground on nearby Pitchford Street to assist with the medical response.
Arrest and investigation
A 31-year-old man was detained by police a short time later. He was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and, as of the latest update, remains in police custody. The Met has launched an investigation and is appealing for witnesses, asking anyone with information to contact them via 101, quoting reference number 3667/12APR.
The incident occurs against a backdrop of concern over violent crime in the area. According to borough-level data, Newham, which includes Stratford, recorded 695 knife crime offences between January and October 2025. This figure represented a 30.1% increase from the previous financial year, with robbery cited as the most common knife crime in the borough during that period.
Stratford has witnessed several serious violent incidents in recent years. In February 2025, three men were stabbed on The Broadway, with a fourth suffering a jaw injury. In April 2023, two 16-year-old boys were seriously injured in a stabbing on the Elizabeth Line platform at Stratford Station during rush hour. A report from location analysis firm Crystal Roof indicates the annual total crime rate in the immediate area of Stratford Underground Station is rated as high, scoring 10 out of 10 when compared to other local areas in England and Wales.
Road closures and disruption
The police investigation caused major disruption in the area, with cordons remaining in place into Monday. Great Eastern Road was closed following the incident, and sections of High Street were also taped off, with closures visible as early as 6.10am on Monday, April 13.
The Transport for London bus network was significantly affected. Routes 158, 262, 473, and 308 were all diverted away from the scene due to the road closures, with passengers advised to allow extra time for their journeys and to check for live travel updates.
This stabbing was one of several serious knife incidents across the capital over the weekend. On Saturday, April 12, a man was charged with the murder of 21-year-old Finbar Sullivan, who was fatally stabbed in Primrose Hill on April 7. On Sunday, April 13, a separate double stabbing occurred in Hammersmith, west London, where a man in his 50s was taken to hospital.
