18 injured in Sunday Funday shooting sparked by row between girls over boys

Eighteen people were injured in a park shooting allegedly sparked by a teenage argument, with police now confirming that at least 23 people were hurt in total and one young woman has since died.
The violence erupted around 9pm on Sunday at an unsanctioned party near Arcadia Lake in Edmond, Oklahoma, about 13 miles north of Oklahoma City. The gathering, advertised on social media as “Sunday Funday”, drew an estimated 250 young adults to a picnic pavilion close to the Scissortail Campground. Gunfire sent the crowd scattering, leaving victims with gunshot and shrapnel wounds.
According to police, 18 of the injured were taken to local hospitals. Three people remain in critical condition, and several others are listed as serious. An 18-year-old woman died from her injuries on Tuesday, May 5; her name has been withheld at her family’s request. She is the only fatality reported so far. The ages of the victims ranged from 16 to 30.
The argument that sparked the violence
Witnesses have told investigators that the shooting began after a dispute between teenagers escalated. Partygoer Jeremiah Braxton, 18, said the trouble started when a group of girls began arguing over boys. “It just started a whole bunch of chaos,” he told the Associated Press. “Everybody got scared, dudes was panicking, women was panicking, people seeing their friends fight.”

Footage shared on social media shows young people dancing and enjoying themselves at Arcadia Lake before the shooting. In one short clip, a fight appears to break out between several women while others continue dancing or watch from the sidelines. The altercation quickly spread, and within moments shots were fired.
Police believe the shooting was directly triggered by the fight. “It started after a fight erupted at the party,” said Edmond Police Sergeant James Hamm. He added that investigators have found no indication of any ongoing danger to the public.
Investigation and park review
Edmond Police were already responding to a noise complaint about the party when the shooting began. They received multiple reports of shots fired and descended on the scene. No arrests have been made as of Tuesday, and the hunt for suspects is ongoing. While authorities have not released details on the weapons used, unconfirmed reports from the scene described multiple men with rifles and two individuals wearing ski masks opening fire.
Officers are reviewing footage from Flock license plate reader cameras in the area and are interviewing witnesses and victims. A reunification centre was set up at a Walmart in Edmond so families could reconnect with loved ones. According to the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as an incident with at least four victims injured or killed excluding the shooter, the Arcadia Lake attack ranks as the 131st mass shooting in the United States in 2026.

Edmond has a grim history with mass violence. On August 20, 1986, postal worker Patrick Sherrill killed 14 co-workers and himself in one of the deadliest workplace shootings in American history.
Mayor Mark Nash confirmed that the Sunday Funday event was not officially permitted. “The incident happened in a public park designed for large gatherings, but there was no official reservation through the parks department for an event that evening,” he said. “We’re already taking steps to review and strengthen park operations, permitting processes and security measures.” He reassured residents that the community remains safe.
Edmond Police spokesperson Emily Ward confirmed that the department is working tirelessly to locate the suspects and urged anyone with information to come forward. The investigation remains active.
