Veteran actor attends AFL match on break from Jake Gyllenhaal film in Australia

Kevin Costner swapped the film set for the football terraces on Friday night, attending an AFL match between the Brisbane Lions and Carlton at the Gabba while he is in Queensland shooting the dramedy Honeymoon With Harry.
Hollywood Royalty at the Gabba
The 71-year-old actor was spotted in a hospitality box as the game kicked off, prompting AFL commentator Brian Taylor to exclaim: “There’s Kevin Costner. A bit of Hollywood royalty there. It doesn’t get much bigger than Kevin Costner.”
The Brisbane Lions, playing at home, won the match 100-89 against Carlton. Costner’s presence drew immediate online comparisons to his iconic baseball film Field of Dreams, with fans quipping “if you build it, he will come”. Another spectator joked that Costner “might know how to get a free kick against Brisbane at the Gabba”. The actor is a known sports enthusiast, having starred in classic sports films such as Bull Durham and Field of Dreams, and has attended games across multiple codes around the world.
Honeymoon With Harry: Plot and Production
Costner is in Australia to star in Honeymoon With Harry, a dramedy that also features Jake Gyllenhaal and Sarah Pidgeon. The film, in development for more than 20 years, began principal photography in April 2026. It is directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, with a script by Dan Fogelman — the same creative team behind Crazy, Stupid, Love and the TV series This Is Us.

The story follows a man, played by Gyllenhaal, whose fiancée dies two days before their wedding. He decides to go ahead with the planned honeymoon – and takes his would-be father-in-law, an overprotective figure played by Costner, along for the journey. The narrative balances humour and emotional weight, exploring how two grieving strangers form an unexpected bond. Sarah Pidgeon, who recently portrayed Carolyn Bessette in Love Story, also appears in the cast. Other confirmed cast members include pop star Rita Ora and musician Shaggy.
Filming has been taking place at various locations across Queensland, including office buildings in Brisbane’s central business district – where street signs and a restaurant were temporarily renamed to simulate Chicago – and the Whitsunday Islands. The production is expected to inject around AUD 51 million into Queensland’s economy and create roughly 215 local jobs.
For Costner, best known for his role in Yellowstone, the project marks a shift after years spent on his personal passion project, the western saga Horizon: An American Saga.

Other Queensland Sightings
Before Friday night’s match, Costner had been making the most of his time in the Sunshine State. Earlier in the week he was spotted having lunch with two friends at the exclusive Sails restaurant overlooking Noosa Main Beach, where he happily stopped for selfies and a chat with fans. He has also been seen dining at SK Steak and Oyster in Fortitude Valley.
Last weekend, influencer Kayla Boyd – wife of former NRL star Darius Boyd – ran into Costner and snapped a photo with him. “Just a casual Saturday night with our mate Kev. Kind, humble – an absolute gentleman,” she wrote.
