Morgan Gibbs-White provides injury update after heavy challenge in Chelsea victory

An 18-year-old Chelsea debutant was knocked unconscious during a head collision in the first half of Monday’s Premier League fixture against Nottingham Forest, in a match marred by two separate serious head injuries.
Jesse Derry, making his top-flight debut after joining from Crystal Palace last summer, clashed heads with Nottingham Forest defender Zach Abbott as both players went up for a corner in the 44th minute. The England under-19 international collapsed to the turf and required extensive on-pitch treatment, including oxygen, before being stretchered off. He was taken to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for precautionary checks. Chelsea have since confirmed that Derry is “conscious, talking and undergoing precautionary checks.”
The incident prompted a lengthy stoppage of more than ten minutes. Referee Anthony Taylor awarded Chelsea a penalty, but Cole Palmer’s spot-kick was saved by Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels. Abbott, 19, appeared less severely affected and was able to walk from the pitch before being substituted for Neco Williams under concussion protocols. Abbott, who has represented England at various youth levels and captained the under-19 side at the 2025 UEFA European Under-19 Championship, had played 810 minutes in Premier League 2 this season. Derry, son of former Premier League player and manager Shaun Derry, had scored six goals and registered three assists in 1,258 minutes of under-21 football before his senior call-up.
Second head collision forces further substitutions
The match suffered a second alarming head injury in the second half when Nottingham Forest substitute Morgan Gibbs-White and Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez collided head-to-head as Sanchez charged out to clear a long ball. Both players required bandaging on the pitch. Gibbs-White, who had only been on the pitch for twenty minutes, was described as having a “deep cut” but was “speaking normally, he remembers everything.” Sanchez was left bloodied. Both were substituted.
Gibbs-White’s departure was a significant blow for Nottingham Forest, who had already made eight changes to their starting lineup with an eye on their Europa League semi-final second leg against Aston Villa. The 25-year-old has been a key contributor this season with 13 goals and three assists in the Premier League, accumulating 2,909 minutes and an average FotMob rating of 7.12. His substitution compounds an existing injury list for Forest that includes Callum Hudson-Odoi, John Victor, Nicolo Savona, Murillo, Jair Cunha (doubt), Ibrahima Sangare (doubt), and Willy Boly.
For Chelsea, the defeat marked their sixth consecutive league loss, extending a poor run of form. The club’s own casualty list remains extensive: Estevao Willian is out for the season, Mykhailo Mudryk is serving a ban (with an appeal ongoing), Levi Colwill and Reece James had returned to training but their availability was uncertain, Filip Jorgensen is out after surgery, and Jamie Gittens is injured.
Broadcasters covering the match opted not to show replays of either head collision, underscoring the severity of both incidents. The result itself was overshadowed by the medical emergencies that halted play twice.
Derry remains at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital undergoing precautionary checks. The club has confirmed he is conscious and speaking.
