May half-term travellers to benefit from £6 South Western Railway fares

South Western Railway (SWR) has launched a “May Rail Sale” offering 40,000 discounted train tickets from just £6 each way, valid for travel during the half-term week and May bank holiday. The sale opened on May 8th and runs until May 18th, with tickets available for journeys between Saturday 23rd and Sunday 31st May. Matthew Winnie, SWR’s Chief Customer and Commercial Officer, said: “Our first-ever big May Rail Sale is all about helping customers enjoy great value days out and short breaks across the SWR network during the half-term and May bank holiday period. Whether it’s a seaside escape, a cultural city break or a countryside adventure, there are so many fantastic destinations that can be reached easily, affordably and sustainably by rail.”

Passengers should note that tickets are limited and will be sold only until the end of 18th May – or sooner if they sell out. A spokesperson advised that the most popular destinations have fewer tickets available, and recommended using the sale as a chance to visit smaller towns along the network, where more tickets remain.

Understanding the fare zones

The discounted tickets are organised into three simple fare zones based on distance from London. Short-distance journeys to and from the capital cost £6, mid-distance trips cost £9, and long-distance travel is priced at £12. For example, a return trip to Portsmouth, Southampton, or Salisbury falls into the £9 mid-distance zone, while journeys to Bournemouth, Exeter, or Weymouth are priced at £12. SWR operates services from London Waterloo across London’s southern suburbs and south-west to the coast, covering areas including Berkshire, Wiltshire, Somerset, and Devon, as well as the Isle of Wight via the Island Line. The full zone map and sale terms and conditions are available on the ticket-buying page – customers should scroll down to find them.

Additional savings with railcards

For those who hold a valid railcard, a further one-third discount can be applied to the sale prices. Eligible railcards include the 16-25, 26-30, Family & Friends, Senior, HM Forces, Disabled Persons, Veterans, and Two Together railcards. This means, for example, a £12 long-distance ticket could be reduced to £8 for a railcard holder.

Tickets are advance purchase only and are non-refundable, though they can be changed before departure with a potential administration fee. Off-Peak time restrictions apply on weekdays (generally from 09:30), while weekends and bank holidays are unrestricted. SWR does not charge booking fees when purchasing directly. Passengers should also check for planned engineering works: on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st May, engineering work between Reading and Wokingham/Guildford will affect SWR services between Reading and London Waterloo, and between Aldershot and Guildford. Additionally, on Saturday 9th May, buses will replace trains between Woking and Basingstoke. Travel updates should be checked before setting off.
